Game Layout
The main game screen consists of four sections from top to bottom:
- Status Bar
- Word List
- Letter Area
- Play Buttons
The Status Bar indicates the current Game Mode and Level Score. If the game is timed, it will also show the time left and briefly flash the time gained when a word is guessed correctly.
The Word List displays all words possible in this level. Words are revealed as they are guessed.
The Letter Area is where you will build words, by moving possible letters from the home row to the building row.
The Play Buttons allow you to perform action needed to create and play words.
Completing a Level
Each Word Whirl Game consists of one or more levels. Each level has six letters. From these letters, you create words from three to six characters in length.
If you can use all six letters to make a word, you move on to the next level. If you cannot find a six letter word, the game ends at the end of the current level.
Timed Game Mode
Timed Games only allow a certain amount of time to complete the level. Time is added for words found, according to their length.
The level ends when the time runs out or you have found all words, whichever comes first.
A bonus is given for the time remaining if all words are found.
Puzzle Game Mode
Puzzle Games have no time limit. A word using all the letters must be found to move on to the next level, but you can take as long as you need to find it.
The levels ends when you find all words or decide to manually end the level.
A bonus is given if you find all words in the level.
Playing with Touchscreen
Move letters up to the word builing row by tapping on each letter.
Press the Whirl button to shuffle letters in the home row.
Tap the Use button to play a word of three letters or greater.
Tap the Clear button to remove all letters from the building row.
Once your first word has been played, tapping the Last button will load the last word played into an empty building row.
In Puzzle mode, the End button is enabled to finish the current level, before all words are guessed. A dialog will open to confirm ending the level and warning is displayed if the level has not been cleared.
There are two features that are only available on the Touchscreen:
Tapping on any letter in the building row will move it back home. If needed, the remaining letters will shift to the left to fill in the gap made by the missing letter.
Tapping on a guessed word from the word list will clear any letters in the building row and load this word. You can think if it as the Last word button for all previously played words.
Playing with Keyboard
Typing letters on the keyboard loads them onto the building row.
The enter key works as the Use/Last button, the spacebar works as the Clear button, and the ampersand key (@) performs a Whirl.
The backspace key will remove letters, one at a time, from the right side of the word.
Guessing Words
When you guess a correct word, you will see the building row flash green and the word will reveal itself in the word list that the top of the screen.
If you guess a correct word that was previously guesses, the word in the word list will bounce out at you to show that it was already played.
If a guess was incorrect, the building row will flash red.
Word Hints
The list of possible words is displayed at the top of the game screen. Words are listed in order of their length then alphabetical. This will give you a little hint when you are stuck.
